Conditions of Participation
- The future of
tourism will depend heavily on whether it will develop in a way which
is socially responsible towards the people in the destination areas.
Based on this background, and in connection with the International Tourism
Exchange 2009 in Berlin, entrants are invited to participate in the
14th TO DO!, an international contest for the promotion of socially
responsible tourism.
- Only projects
and measures relevant to tourism development can be entered for the
contest, and whose planning/realisation ensure the involvement
of the different interests and requirements of the local people through
participation (for example by information, by interviews, by discussion
and by creative participation in the decision-making process).
In addition,
the following aspects should be considered:
- Strengthening
the awareness among the local people with regard to the chances
and risks of tourism development in their daily economic,
social and cultural life.
- Participation
of the broad local population strata regarding the positive
economic, social and cultural effects of tourism.
- Guarantee
of the attractiveness of jobs in tourism for the local people
by improvement of working conditions in relation to payment,
social security, working hours, education and training.
- Reinforcement
of the local culture as well as the cultural identity of those
living in tourism destination areas.
- Avoidance,
minimization of social and cultural damage caused by tourism
in destination areas.
Projects/measures
entered for the contest must be in line with the principles of environmental
compatibility.
- The organizer
of the contest is the Studienkreis für Tourismus und Entwicklung
e.V., Ammerland/ Germany (Institute for Tourism and Development).
Cooperational partners (partly since 1995):
- Entries to the
contest can be projects/measures in industrial countries as well as
in development countries under the responsibility of:
- public
institutions and organizations
- private
companies and organizations in the tourism industry
-
other legal entities or private individuals.
- The projects or
measures entered for the contest must already have been implemented.
It must be substantiated in detail that the criteria for the contest
mentioned under point 2 are fully met (see appended questions to the
application form). The explanation must be documented by appropriate
enclosures (for instance through project papers, press reports, expert
opinions, photographic
material, in case video material).
- Only project
descriptions and documents in German or English can be accepted.
- The applicant authorizes the organizer of the contest to publish, either partially or completely, the submitted application documents in connection with the execution and subsequent activities of the contest (which includes also a presentation of the project on the TO DO!-website of the Studienkreis). Further he holds the organizer harmless against any claims by third parties. The applicant furthermore guarantees the organizer the right to examine the project/measure on the spot and he will support him to be best of his abilities.
- The prizes related to the TO DO! contest are in recognition of the objectives and achievements of a project/measure at the time the award is given. The prizes consists of the TO DO!2008 trophy and of a certificate.
The awarding ceremony will take place on the occasion of the International Tourism Exchange 2009 in Berlin. In absence of prize-worthy entries, no award will be made.
- The award decision
will be made by a jury of experts, whose composition will be published
at the time of the award ceremony.
- Entries
for the contest must be submitted by August 31, 2008 thereby
using the form attached to these conditions of participation, together
with the substantiation and documentation specified under item 5.

See, Germany. Entered applications and enclosures remain in the possession of
the organizer of the contest. A return of the material is not possible.
- The award
winners will be informed latest by January 31, 2009 by the contest organizer
and they will be invited to attend the award ceremony (see item 8).
At the same time, contestants, whose projects or measures have not qualified
for a prize, will be informed accordingly.
- With the application
the entrant acknowledges the conditions of participation. Legal actions
are excluded.
